What is Slow Tourism? Who does it? How can I monetise the trend?
I've seen the intention for slow tourism in my #travelresearch since we came out of COVID-19, and now, it is coming into play.
Well, travelling slowly LOL. But it articulates one of our prevailing trends and experiences sought - immersive travel and getting to know the locals.
Many travellers, particularly those in the boomer demographic, prefer a leisurely pace while travelling, seeking deep engagement with the local culture—this is often referred to as the golden gap year.
Staying in one destination for an extended period of time allows travellers to really immerse themselves into a culture and get to know the locals, local food experiences and how people live day-to-day.
Travellers 50+ and boomer retirees. And the great thing about boomer travellers is that they have the time and the money to embark on slow tourism escapades.
Digital nomadism is another way that slow tourism is playing out. People of all ages as our world adapts to hybrid work, micro-businesses and entrepreneurship.
Companies like Intrepid Travel allow staff members to work from any Intrepid office worldwide for 3 months out of the year.
And according to Tripadvisor, the trend towards 'slow tourism' is growing.
Hoteliers are encouraged to develop tailored packages and offerings for these travellers.
We see this worldwide, but it is also an opportunity for domestic tourism operators.
You can link into other services within the community to provide opportunities to meet and shop with locals.
There is a website called Nomad Stays.com that acts as an aggregator of hotels, guesthouses, and various stays for slow travellers.
Packages always include WIFI, often meals and laundry.
If you are an agent, you can offer long-stay options to your clients - which can be very profitable in terms of commissions.
I personally love this style of travel and I am working towards becoming a digital nomad with my hubby when the kids finish high school.
